Fredericton – David Coon, MLA for Fredericton South and Leader of the Green party of New Brunswick is looking to Premier Gallant to improve public transportation in the province.
« Public transportation is an essential service to ensure New Brunswickers can access healthcare and employment, and travel for work and family obligations within our metropolitan areas and between our regions, » said Coon. « The percentage of people who do not drive or drive rarely is rapidly increasing as our population ages, at the same time as public services are being centralized in our urban centres, requiring more travel to access them, yet no cabinet minister has yet been given the mandate to ensure New Brunswickers can travel without depending on private vehicle ownership.”
Premier Gallant needs to lay out his vision for public transportation in New Brunswick, » said Coon. « The timing is perfect as he has just received recommendations from the Economic and Social Inclusion Corporation’s task force on public transportation this month. New revenue from federal government for public transportation and from carbon pricing will provide funds to pay for improving access to public transportation in our cities, within our regions, and between them,” said Coon.
The Green Party leaders say a public transportation system for New Brunswick should include provincial support for:

– rural transit authorities, such as the Rural Lynx proposed for southwestern New Brunswick, to link towns and rural areas with public services and employment in urban centres
– expanding municipal transit services
– connecting urban centres through short-line rail in partnership with VIA Rail
« Most importantly, the Premier must give a member of his cabinet the mandate to establish an accessible and affordable public transportation system for New Brunswick, » said Coon. “To this point, no one in government has held that mandate, leaving us with inadequate, incomplete, and inconvenient public transportation infrastructure.”

« Le transport collectif est un service essentiel afin que les gens du Nouveau-Brunswick puissent avoir accès aux soins de santé et aux emplois et afin qu’ils puissent se déplacer pour obligations professionnelles et familiales dans nos zones métropolitaines et entre nos régions, a dit M. Coon. Le pourcentage de personnes qui ne conduisent pas ou qui conduisent rarement augmente rapidement à mesure que notre population vieillit. S’ajoute à cela le fait que les services publics sont centralisés dans nos agglomérations urbaines, ce qui requiert plus de déplacements pour y avoir accès ; aucun ministre n’a pourtant reçu le mandat de s’assurer que les gens du Nouveau-Brunswick peuvent se déplacer sans devoir être propriétaires d’un véhicule particulier. »
« Le premier ministre Gallant doit présenter sa vision en matière de transport collectif au Nouveau-Brunswick, a affirmé M. Coon. Le moment est idéal puisqu’il vient juste de recevoir des recommandations du groupe de travail de la Société de l’inclusion économique et sociale relativement au transport collectif. Grâce à de nouvelles recettes provenant du gouvernement fédéral pour le transport collectif et de la tarification du carbone, il y aura des fonds qui permettront d’améliorer l’accès au transport collectif dans nos villes, dans nos régions et entre elles », a déclaré M. Coon.
Le chef du Parti vert affirme qu’un système de transport collectif pour le Nouveau-Brunswick devrait comprendre un soutien provincial pour :

– établir des commissions de transport rural, comme le service RuralLynx proposé dans le sud-ouest du Nouveau-Brunswick, afin que la population des villes et des régions rurales ait accès aux services publics et aux emplois dans les agglomérations urbaines ;
– étendre les services municipaux de transport ;
– relier les agglomérations urbaines par un chemin de fer de courtes lignes en partenariat avec VIA Rail.
« Il faut surtout que le premier ministre donne à l’un des membres de son Cabinet le mandat d’établir un système de transport collectif accessible et abordable pour le Nouveau-Brunswick, a souligné M. Coon. Jusqu’à maintenant, personne au gouvernement n’a rempli ce mandat ; nous nous retrouvons donc avec une infrastructure de transport collectif inadaptée, incomplète et peu pratique. »
