Fredericton – The Public Accounts committee is beginning two weeks of public hearings to follow up on the Auditor General’s recommendations and examine the expenditures of government departments. David Coon, Green party leader and MLA for Fredericton South, is concerned about the lack of details being provided to the committee by departments.
“In my preparation as a member of the Public Accounts committee I was astounded at how meagre the reporting from government departments has become,” said Coon. “We need sufficient information in order to assess whether departments are spending money effectively and efficiently to accomplish their objectives. The annual reports of recent years are wholly inadequate. I raised my concern to Deputy Ministers last year and nothing has changed.”
In 2013/2014, government departments began using a new reporting style that has progressively reduced the information communicated through annual reports.
“This is a big deal,” said Coon. “The public is very concerned with accountability and government waste. The one committee that has the mandate to address these issues is the Public Accounts Committee and it needs to have sufficient information to be able to do its job. The buck stops here. I will be suggesting that our committee suggest to the Legislative Assembly that it require adequate reporting from government departments.”

Fredericton — Le Comité des comptes publics débute deux semaines d’audiences publiques pour donner suite aux recommandations de la vérificatrice générale et examiner les dépenses des ministères. David Coon, chef du Parti vert et député de Fredericton Sud, est préoccupé par le fait que les ministères fournissent peu de détails au comité.
«Dans ma préparation en tant que membre du Comité des comptes publics, j’ai été étonné de constater à quel point les rapports des ministères étaient maigres de détails », a déclaré Coon.
«Nous avons besoin d’informations suffisantes pour évaluer si les ministères dépensent leur argent de manière efficace avec un minimum de coûts pour atteindre leurs objectifs. Les rapports annuels des dernières années sont totalement inadéquats. J’ai soulevé mon inquiétude devant les sous-ministres l’année dernière et il est claire que rien n`a changé. »
En 2013/2014, les ministères ont commencé à utiliser un nouveau style de rapport qui a progressivement réduit les informations contenues dans les rapports annuels.
« C’est un problème sérieux », a expliqué M. Coon «Le public est très préoccupé par la responsabilisation et du gaspillage du gouvernement. Le seul comité ayant pour mandat d’aborder ces questions est le Comité des comptes publics; donc, il doit avoir l’information suffisante afin de faire son travail. Je proposerai à notre comité de suggérer à l’Assemblée législative qu’elle exige un rapportage adéquat des ministères».
