Fredericton – In early March, Premier Gallant will participate in a First Ministers conference hosted by Prime Minister Trudeau to discuss a national climate action strategy. David Coon, MLA for Fredericton South and Leader of the Green Party of New Brunswick has some suggestions for Premier Gallant.
“Since nearly one third of greenhouse emissions in New Brunswick come from the transportation sector,” said Coon, “it is essential that Premier Gallant negotiate support from Ottawa to expand public transit and provide incentives for the purchase of vehicles powered by electricity and biofuels.”
Prime Minister Trudeau has placed a priority on supporting public transit with new infrastructure funding.
“The timing is perfect,” said Coon. “On the heels of the Paris agreement, and with the federal government’s intention to roll out its public transportation and green infrastructure funding to stimulate the economy, New Brunswick has the opportunity to significantly improve public transportation in our province. The green infrastructure funding from the federal government should also be used to accelerate the roll-out of NB Power’s smart electrical grid which will enable New Brunswick to integrate electric vehicles on a large scale,” said Coon.
It was 26 years ago, that provincial environment ministers first called for a national action strategy to combat climate change. Now is the time for action.
–30 –Fredericton – Au début du mois de mars, le premier ministre Gallant participera à une conférence des premiers ministres organisée par le premier ministre Trudeau pour discuter d’une stratégie nationale de lutte contre les changements climatiques. David Coon, député de Fredericton-Sud et chef du Parti vert du Nouveau-Brunswick, a quelques suggestions pour le premier ministre Gallant.
« Puisque près du tiers des émissions de gaz à effet de serre au Nouveau-Brunswick proviennent du secteur du transport », a dit M. Coon, « il est essentiel que le premier ministre Gallant négocie un soutien d’Ottawa pour élargir les services de transport en commun et offrir des incitatifs à l’achat de véhicules alimentés par l’électricité et les biocarburants. »
Le premier ministre Trudeau donne priorité au soutien du transport en commun au moyen d’un nouveau financement visant l’infrastructure.
« Le moment est parfait », a déclaré M. Coon. « Dans la foulée de l’Accord de Paris et grâce à l’intention du gouvernement fédéral de mettre en place un financement visant le transport en commun et l’infrastructure verte pour stimuler l’économie, le Nouveau-Brunswick a la possibilité d’améliorer considérablement le transport en commun dans notre province. Le financement du gouvernement fédéral visant l’infrastructure verte devrait aussi servir à accélérer l’instauration du réseau électrique intelligent d’Énergie NB, ce qui permettra au Nouveau-Brunswick d’intégrer à grande échelle les véhicules électriques », a dit M. Coon.
Il y a 26 ans, les ministres provinciaux de l’Environnement ont été les premiers à réclamer une stratégie nationale de lutte contre les changements climatiques. Maintenant, il est temps d’agir.
