Fredericton – The government of New Brunswick is working on a massive overhaul of the Municipalities and Community Planning Acts, hoping to introduce new legislation this fall. David Coon, MLA for Fredericton South and Leader of the Green Party of New Brunswick is asking government to commence a meaningful public discussion on its legislative proposals before they are presented as bills in the Legislature.
“It is essential that communities have more power to be masters of their own destinies, but legislative changes must not re-introduce old inequalities,” said Coon.
The Green Party Leader wants the government to publish a White Paper on Municipal Reform to walk the public through the major elements of the coming legislative changes, and to strike a Select Committee of the legislature to receive input from New Brunswickers.
“To date, discussions about municipal reform have been limited to the inside baseball of the Department of Local Government,” said Coon. “A White Paper on Municipal Reform, designed to inform New Brunswickers about the key elements of the planned bills, and a Select Committee, mandated to hear from the public, will ensure that municipal reform is done the right way. This will safeguard the achievements of Equal Opportunity, while increasing the authority of municipalities to act in the best interests of their citizens.”

Fredericton– Le gouvernement du Nouveau-Brunswick travaille sur des grands changements qu’il veut apporter à la Loi sur les municipalités et la Loi sur l’urbanisme et présenter un nouveau projet de loi cet automne. David Coon, député de Fredericton-Sud et chef du Parti vert du Nouveau-Brunswick demande que le gouvernement s’engage dans une conversation sérieuse avec le public portant sur leurs propositions avant de les présenter en tant que législation devant l’Assemblé législative.
« Il est très important que les municipalités aient plus de pouvoir et contrôle sur leur destins, mais les changements législatifs ne doivent pas réintroduire les anciennes inégalités, » a dit M. Coon
Le chef du Parti vert du Nouveau-Brunswick demande que le gouvernement publisse un livre blanc sur les réformes municipales afin de laisser le public savoir les grandes lignes des changements et de charger un comité de recevoir et analyser les idées des Néo-Brunswickois.es.
« Jusqu’à date, toutes les discussions portant sur les réformes municipales ont été limité dans la cuisine interne du ministère des Gouvernements locaux, » a dit M. Coon. «Un livre blanc décrivant les grandes lignes des réformes municipales et les changements législatif ainsi qu’un comité responsable d’être engagé avec le public assureront que les réformes municipales seront faites de manière juste. Ceci protègera les succès de l’égalité des opportunités et, en même temps, augmentera l’autorité des municipalités d’agir dans le meilleur intérêt de leurs citoyens. »
